Former River Valley Student Brenden Frye Remembered After May 9 Rollover Crash In Rural Cherokee County
Brenden Frye, a 15-year-old former River Valley Community School District student who had recently enrolled in the Cherokee Community School District, died early Saturday, May 9, 2026, after a single-vehicle rollover crash in rural Cherokee County.
The Iowa State Patrol reported that the crash happened at about 2:33 a.m. on Highway C66, just west of J Avenue, as a 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix GT2 carried four teenage boys westbound.
Investigators said the 16-year-old driver lost control for reasons still under review, and the vehicle entered the north ditch, rolled over, struck a utility pole, and came to rest.
Frye sat in the rear seat and was pronounced dead at the scene.
School officials said counseling support will be available Monday for students and staff in both districts as classmates, teachers, friends, and family members grieve this sudden loss.
Memorial service details and funeral arrangements will be announced later by family members.
