John L. Humphries of Greenville Remembered for Four Decades of Broadcasting Leadership at WYFF 4 and Service Across Upstate South Carolina

John L. Humphries, a respected Greenville broadcasting leader connected with WYFF 4 and the Hearst Television family, has died, according to the social media post shared on Wednesday, May 13, 2026.

Humphries built a distinguished career across more than four decades, beginning with early media work noted in a 1978 Holiday Inn marquee photo advertising “DJ Hump.”

Humphries later served as a sports anchor in Charlotte, held leadership roles at WGAL in Pennsylvania, and returned to Greenville to guide WYFF 4 with steady commitment.

Earlier this year, Humphries earned induction into the SCBA Hall of Fame, marking a career defined by local service, mentorship, and professional excellence.

Colleagues remember Humphries as a leader who encouraged young broadcasters to “be curious and be bold” while supporting civic groups such as the United Way and the Urban League.

Memorial service details will be announced later by family members.
