William Smedley Of Odessa Remembered After May 30 Midland County Motorcycle Collision Near South Fairgrounds Road And Cloverdale Road
William Smedley, 47, of Odessa, died after a late-night Midland County collision on May 30, 2026.
Authorities said Smedley rode a 2021 Ducati motorcycle south on South Fairgrounds Road at about 11:24 p.m. when a northbound 2013 Hyundai Sonata crossed into the southbound lanes near Cloverdale Road while passing another vehicle.
Investigators said the Hyundai had no required headlights at that hour and entered Smedley’s path before the collision.
Emergency responders took Smedley to Midland Memorial Hospital, where medical staff worked to save them, but Smedley later died from their injuries.
Authorities identified the Hyundai driver as 19-year-old Eduardo Gaytan of Midland, who was not hurt and later faced a vehicle manslaughter charge along with citations for several roadway violations.
The Texas Department of Public Safety continues to review the case as family members and loved ones mourn Smedley’s passing.
Memorial and funeral service details will be announced later by the family.
